What Google Really Rewards in Business Websites Today
A short field guide to the signals that actually move rankings in 2026.
Google’s own guidance is that SEO changes typically take weeks to months to show effect, and meaningful traffic movement takes longer. Anyone promising first-page rankings for competitive terms in thirty days is either working with keywords no one is searching, gaming a metric that isn’t traffic, or both.
The most common version of this pitch: an agency promises ‘first-page rankings within thirty days’ and delivers on ten keywords no buyer would ever search – a competitor’s brand name plus your city, or a five-word long-tail phrase with zero commercial intent. Rankings graph goes up; revenue goes nowhere.
The tell is the keyword list. If your prospective SEO partner won’t share the target keyword list until after you sign, or if the list they do share is full of terms you’ve never heard a customer use, walk.
