What Makes an Email Template Actually Perform

Deliverability is a compounding asset. Broadcast sending erodes it quietly.

Every unsegmented email to your full list teaches Gmail and Apple Mail something about your sender reputation. When engagement on that send is low – which it will be, because most of the list has no reason to care about most of the content – the mailbox providers adjust your inbox placement downward for the next send. Compound this over a year of weekly broadcasts and the deliverability erosion is measured in double-digit percentage points of revenue.

The economics are unforgiving: it takes years to build sender reputation and weeks to lose it. Teams that batch-and-blast are borrowing against a compounding asset every time they hit send.

The fix is not sophisticated. Segment by engagement recency; suppress non-openers past a threshold; hold out subscribers who haven’t interacted in ninety days from broadcast sends and reactivate them through a dedicated flow. This is the difference between a list that keeps compounding in revenue per recipient and one that quietly decays until someone notices the drop and blames the copy.
