Why Most Email Marketing Feels Ineffective

Most email struggles because it is reactive. The fix is structural, not creative.

The topic cluster idea got flattened into a content format the moment it hit the marketing blogosphere: write one pillar page, write ten spoke pages, link them together, done. The result is thousands of sites with a ‘pillar page’ that is really just a long article and ten ‘spokes’ that are only barely related.

The idea, as originally scoped, is a map – a way of thinking about how your buyers understand a topic and how each sub-question relates to the parent one. The internal linking is the point, not a garnish. A well-mapped cluster tells Google exactly which page on your site is the definitive answer to the parent question and which pages are the definitive answers to each sub-question, with unambiguous internal signal.

Sites that treat clusters as maps rank the pillar page for the head term within six to nine months. Sites that treat them as a content template rank nothing in particular and blame the algorithm.

Before you write another cluster, draw the map. If you can’t draw it, the cluster isn’t ready to be written.
